Gale Warning

Northwest winds, increasing to gale force at times this morning on coasts from Carnsore Point to Roches Point to Valentia, will extend to coasts from Fair Head to Howth Head to Carnsore Point and to the Irish Sea this afternoon.

Meteorological situation at 0300: Frontal troughs continue to extend eastwards across Ireland and will clear later today; a wave depression on the main front, about 150 miles south of Mizen Head, will track northeast while deepening to reach southeast Scotland by late today.

Forecast for coasts from Fair Head to Howth Head to Carnsore Point and the Irish Sea -
Wind: South to southeast force 4 to 6, becoming cyclonic variable force 2 to 4 this morning; then turning northwest during the afternoon and increasing force 7 to gale force 8, before backing west and decreasing force 5 or 6 overnight.

Forecast for coasts from Carnsore Point to Roches Point to Valentia -
Wind: Variable force 3 or less becoming northwest this morning and increasing force 6 or 7, occasionally gale force 8; later backing southwest and decreasing force 4 or 5 tonight.

Forecast for coasts from Valentia to Erris Head to Fair Head -
Wind: South to southeast or variable force 3 to 5; turning northwest force 4 or 5 this morning, then backing west to southwest later today.

Weather for all coasts and for the Irish Sea: Rain, with local fog patches, clearing to showers from the west later today.

Visibility for all coasts and for the Irish Sea: Moderate to poor, becoming mostly good later today.

Warning of heavy swell: Nil.

Outlook for a further 24 hours until 0600 Thursday 09 October 2008: Fresh to strong west to southwest winds will back southwesterly while moderating; scattered showers in the southwest and west for a time, then mainly fair.
